WIT Locating Library Resources

Open http://wit.edu/library in another browser window to work through this tutorial side by side.

Welcome!

The Wentworth Library provides scholarly books, e-books and journals that you will want to use in addition to Google and Wikipedia to add credibility to your work.

Trustworthy academic information is not a mystery, but finding it takes special tools.

The purpose of this guide is to offer strategies to help find, locate and obtain these resources.

Tip: This tutorial works best in Firefox or Chrome. If you are using Internet Explorer you may have navigation problems.

Use the arrows at the bottom of this guide box to move through the tutorial.

Reference Resources

Reference books are often used at the beginning of the research process to gather brief background information on a topic. Examples of reference sources include dictionaries, encyclopedias and handbooks.

Online reference sources can be found under the Research by Subject tab (next to Library Catalog).

Click the Research by Subject tab and then select Reference.

For encyclopedias, try CREDO Reference, Britannica Library or Gale Virtual Reference Library.

For word definitions, try the Oxford English Dictionary.

Looking for information about historically significant figures or today's news makers? Try Biography in Context

For even more reference books in print format check with a librarian.

Books

First click here to return to the library home page.

You can find books and e-books on your subject by using the library catalog.

Try searching the library catalog for BIM using the search box in the middle of the page.

Tip: You can limit your search results using the options on the right.

If your search was successful you will see a list of matching results.

Click on a title to learn more about the book.

Click on show full record (in green) to see a summary, table of contents and subject headings.

Now that you are looking at the full record of a book you can look at the subjects.

Clicking on a subject will take you to similar books on the same topic.

Journals

First click here to return to the library home page.

You can locate articles in journals, magazines and newspapers by using a library database.

Click on the Research by Subject tab and then select Civil Engineering and Construction Management. You will see links to collections of subject specific resources.

The ASCE Journals and Proceedings under Core Resources includes articles about engineering.

Academic Search Premier or Academic OneFile under General Resources are multi-disciplinary article databases beneficial for focusing your research -- after conducting your basic background research in books.

Tip: Don't forget to check out other Research by Subject collections. You may find Management and Business or News helpful as well.

Research Guides

Another strategy for identifying which databases will be best for locating relevant online resources is to use a Research Guide.

Research Guides are created by librarians with expertise in a particular subject area.

Let's look for company information using the Research Guide strategy.

Click on Research by Subject, then choose Management and Business.

Next, under Research Guides, click on Business and Management. It is the first item under Research Guides.

Click on the tab for Company and Industry Information.

Try Hoover's Company Profiles or LexisNexis Academic to find in-depth information on a company and/or its competitors.

Research Consultations

Just a reminder that you can always set up a personalized research consultation with a Wentworth librarian for one-on-one assistance.

It's best to reach out to a librarian early in process. We can help you identify the most appropriate sources for your research needs.

We look forward to working with you.
